What kind of yarn to choose for your yarn shop?
The theme of sustainability and green mindset has become increasingly important in recent years. When choosing and purchasing yarn for handicrafts, we want to ensure that we make the best choice for our health and the environment. Given the proliferation of “fake news” today, seeing information from reliable organizations, certifications, and labels serves as an important guide in making choices. Certified Schachenmayr yarns can be identified by the OEKO-TEX logo found on the yarn label.
Promoting sustainability and environmental protection is paramount for MEZ. MEZ’s production units in Hungary and suppliers within and outside the EU have for years complied with all applicable and stringent European Union regulations, producing most Schachenmayr yarns according to the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 highest level, product class I.
Human ecological requirements are becoming stricter, especially for products in direct contact with the skin and for sensitive skin types. Product class I is the highest level and applies to textile products and toys for infants and toddlers up to three years old. The OEKO-TEX certification must be renewed annually, and its validity can be checked on the OEKO-TEX website. The testing criteria for this certification are very thorough and often go far beyond many existing national and international guidelines.
Schachenmayr yarns are divided into the following categories:
Schachenmayr Baby Smiles collection yarns are created according to the highest quality and safety standards. To ensure baby’s comfort, the yarns are skin-friendly, saliva-resistant and free of allergenic and harmful substances. Baby Smiles yarns are machine washable and can be tumble dried. All yarns in the Baby Smiles collection are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. To support the yarn collection, magazines have been created to inspire knitters of all skill levels. Specifically crafted for knitting for toddlers, the Schachenmayr Baby Smiles collection is produced with genuine quality and love for all mothers of young children.
Schachenmayr Merino Extafine merino wool yarn collection features extremely soft yarns with high-quality raw materials and easy care properties. The Merino Extrafine yarns are made from mulesing-free merino wool sourced from South America and South Africa. The most popular choice is Merino Extrafine 120, which offers an excellent color range of 84 shades and a suitable yardage of 120 meters for many knitting projects. All merino wool yarns come with the EasyStart solution, where the yarn beginning is conveniently attached to the label. Finished knitted items are machine washable at 40°C (wool cycle) and suitable for tumble drying. All Merino collection yarns are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. Schachenmayr’s Merino collection represents the highest quality in softness, practicality, and luxurious natural composition.
The classic Schachenmayr Original yarns are designed with fashion trends in mind, offering a selection of yarns with both natural and synthetic compositions. The most renowned and top-selling yarns in Schachenmayr collection are the Catania made from 100% mercerized cotton, and the acrylic yarn Bravo. The more popular of the two, Schachenmayr Catania, is manufactured according to strict EU regulations at the MEZ factory, and is certified with the OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Product Class 1 certificate. Product Class 1 certificate holders must meet the strictest of criteria, which is why the Catania yarn is also suitable for making blankets, clothes and toys for babies and toddlers. In addition, the Catania yarn has undergone separate laboratory tests (European Standards DIN EN 71-3), which confirms that the yarn is suitable for the production of toys. The Catania range offers a selection of 100 rich color tones
