“What happens when two centipedes hug each other? A living zipper.”

A joke from Delphi

It took engineers 22 years to invent a zipper, a tool that makes life much more convenient for billions of people every day. That’s why we bring definitive quality directly to you through our good retailers. Opti’s selection includes various types of zippers, and by choosing between them, you are guaranteed to find a zipper with strength, purpose and appearance that suits your needs. The strength of the zipper is related to the width of its teeth and is measured in millimeters – the higher the number, the stronger the zipper. In everyday use, the most common zippers have tooth widths of either 4 mm or 6 mm. When choosing a zipper, the weight of the fabric must also be taken into account. Thinner fabrics usually require lighter locks, while thicker fabrics require stronger locks.

Did you know that the zipper cover on men’s jeans opens to the right, whereas the zipper cover on women’s jeans opens to the left?

There are primarily four different types of locks available.

  • Universal spirals – for these, also known as polyester zippers, a spiral is sewn or woven into the edge band of the zipper (S-technology). Available in two different tooth widths, 4 mm and 6 mm, the universal spirals are the most durable in terms of their strength. In the case of skirts, trousers, blouses and home furnishing textiles, closed-bottom locks are the most popular variety. For jackets, open-bottom zippers are the go-to. Spiral locks are recognizable by their yellow label.

  • Chisel locks – used mostly for sewing dresses, skirts and trousers, chisel locks are suitable for clothes where you want the lock to be as invisible as possible. Chisel locks are, too, recognizable by a yellow label.
  • In the production of plastic tooth zippers, plastic granules are cast into the edge band of the zipper. Available in two different tooth widths, 4 mm and 6 mm, these zippers can either be closed-bottom open-bottom, or two-way type locks. Closed-bottom zippers are mostly intended for sewing fleeces, sweaters and sports bags. Open-bottom and two-way zippers are especially well-suited for jackets. Plastic tooth zippers are recognizable by their blue label. The most innovative products among the plastic-toothed zippers are black-colored zippers with a reflective strip, with lengths ranging from 30 cm to 90 cm.
  • In the production of metal zippers, the teeth are pressed one-by-one onto the edge band of the zipper, with the gear usually being made of durable brass. Available in two different tooth widths, those being 4 mm and 6 mm, metal zippers can also have either a closed-bottom, open-bottom or two-way type lock. Locks closed from the bottom are used for sewing women’s and men’s leisure clothing. Open-bottom and two-way locks are mainly used for sewing leather jackets and jackets in general. Metal zippers can be identified by a gray label. The most popular products in the line-up of metal zippers are zippers with a denim edge band and 4.5 mm gold teeth, with lengths 6 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm, 12 cm, 15 cm, 18 cm and 20 cm.
